Arrival and departure
The international Airport of Bordeaux (BOD) is located in the outskirt town of Mérignac, and provides direct flights to major airports in Europe, North Africa and the USA, and two-stop connections to many more destinations. To get to Bordeaux proper from the airport, you can:
- Take a taxi ; it should cost around 20 EUR plus luggage costs.
- Use public transportation. The airport shuttle, jet-bus, is a four-stop bus to the centre of Bordeaux. There is one departure every 45 minutes, and the total journey takes about 30 minutes; you can get off at the second stop (Place Gambetta, in the centre of Bordeaux and near tramway line B, stop
Gambetta ), the third stop (Office du Tourisme - Bordeaux Visitor's Center, near tramway lines B and C, stopQuinconces ), or the last stop (Gare St-Jean - the Railway station, 15 minutes on foot from the ESSLLI site and near Téneo appartments). - Rent a car.
The railway station, Bordeaux St-Jean, has direct TGV connections to Paris and Bruxelles. Train is also a convenient and mostly cheap means of transport throughout Europe, check with the national company for connection details. The station is conveniently located, and you can:
- Get to the ESSLLI site on foot. It is a 15-minute walk, straight along the Cours de la Marne (from the main exit, turn right and walk along the station building; the correct street is opposite the station, at the far end of the main building).
- Take the tramway, line C; stop is
Gare St-Jean . - Take the bus. Line 16 and 17 both get near the ESSLLI site, stop
Place de la Victoire . - Take a taxi ; a ride to the ESSLLI site, teachers' lodgings or most central hotels should be quick and cost around 6 EUR plus luggage costs. To get to the student accommodation location, expect a 15-minutes rides costing around 15 EUR plus luggage costs.
- Rent a car.
Accommodation locations and surroundings

- The ESSLLI site is a 5-minutes walk from the Cercle, straight along Cours de l'Argonne (turn right when exiting the building).

Public transportation in Bordeaux
Bus and tramways make the transportation network of the city and suburban areas. The same fare-system is used for both, regardless of distance traveled: a single ticket is valid for an hour, during which you can get as far as you wish using any number of buses or tramways. 5 and 10-journey tickets are available, as well as 1-day and 7-day tickets; some should be provided as part of your ESSLLI kit. This system does not include the buses or trains to the countryside or coast, nor the airport shuttle.
The three-lines tramway network is the fastest way to get around; tramways come around every 10 minutes in summer (20 minutes late in the evening or on Sundays); the network map is available here. A quick stop list:
